Cathy Sears

Hello! My name is Catherine (Cathy) Sears. First and foremost, I am a mother. My sons are men now, but they will always be my boys. I grew up in Chicago but raised my sons in Des Plaines, where I currently reside. I am currently a middle school teacher. My official title is Student Services Interventionist. I support sixth, seventh, and eighth graders academically and emotionally (Who doesn’t need an understanding ear every once in a while?). This is my 19th year as a middle school teacher but my 29th year as a district employee. I taught seventh and eighth grade language arts and literacy, along with eighth grade social studies. As a Reading Specialist, I worked with all middle school grades to increase reading abilities as well as instill a love for reading. Prior to venturing into middle school, I taught an extended-day kindergarten program for eight years and provided programs for families with early childhood aged children. Within these past years I have also taught some college courses in the Reading Department at Northeastern Illinois University.

When I am not teaching or tutoring, I can be found cycling around Des Plaines on my bike, kayaking, reading a good book, and/or enjoying family time with my large extended family. Spending time at my church is another important aspect of my life. Serving at church allows me to meet new people and help others as necessary. Since teaching is in my blood…literally, I can’t stop doing it…I will also be teaching a finance class at my church. I’m so excited!

I love to teach. Teaching, though, is more than book knowledge or skill building. To teach is to care about the student, understand his/her needs, and build courage and knowledge within the child. Teaching is sharing my love for learning with a student and watching him/her discover inner abilities. I have been tutoring for iAchieve Learning for four years now. I love working with students and their families. Helping students grow confidently in their own learning is rewarding.
