Helpful Scholarship Apps and Websites for High School and College Students
With the price of college seemingly increasing by the minute, more and more college graduates are emerging with school loans large enough to equal a mortgage. We tell kids at a young age that going to college is a needed addition to their education, but are all majors really helping them enough to make up the difference financially. If the starting pay in their respected careers is not quite high enough, they will have to decide whether they can afford paying rent and their student loans at the same time. Many can’t and this is why we have so many young people living with their parents years after graduating from college.
The key to being able to afford college is knowing which scholarships and grants are out there. The problem is most high school students are not aware of many of the scholarships available to them. Fortunately for my brother back in the day, he was able to acquire a lesser-known scholarship that paid for his entire four years of college and left him with a few extra hundred dollars a month as well. He was basically getting paid to go to school. How amazing would that be? This is something that you might be able to accomplish, too.
Technology is a great thing. It makes life so much easier. Whenever I try explaining to my students about how back in the old days we had to look up information in encyclopedias, they just shake their heads like they can’t imagine such a thing. Same thing with spell check. Whenever we had to type up our papers, we always had to have a dictionary handy. Well, technology just made it much easier for finding available scholarships too. Listed below are a few apps and websites that can help you figure out which scholarships you should be applying for your senior year in high school. Finding the right one can simplify your life so much that you just would have to concentrate on your classes instead of your bank account.
Scholly
Scholly is an app that is growing in popularity daily. To date, they have helped students win over $70 million in scholarships already. By creating a free Scholly account, you will instantly get access to tips and advice for applying for scholarships. But that is not all. For $2.99 a month, students receive a personalized scholarship matching and application tracking form. Spending three dollars a month on something that can net you tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships is a great tradeoff.
Its founder, Christopher Gray, was able to secure $1.3 million in scholarships for himself the old fashion way of doing the research and completing applications. He set out to simplify it with Scholly. Now quickly fill out eight different sections and their database will provide you with scholarships that might work for you.
Scholarships.com
With the easy to remember name, Scholarships.com has helped students acquire more than $19 billion in financial aid since it began in 1998. The website can search for college scholarships in categories such as academic major, athletics, art, ethnicity, first in family, GPA, minority, music, state, name, or type. Quite a few people just believe that scholarships are only available for high GPAs and high school sports stars, but this is the furthest thing from the truth. There are scholarships out there for literally some of the strangest things you can think of.
Cappex.com
Cappex has not been around as long as Scholarships.com, but they are quickly making up for lost time. They have over $11 billion available in their scholarship directory. Not only do they help you find that free money, they also list your admission chances, match up the best colleges for your major, and will help you set up a campus visit.
These are only three of many available apps and websites that can help you shave down your college debt. It would not hurt to have an account with each of these just in case. You will have a better chance to land that important scholarship that will save you and your parents a lot of money down the road.
