Tutor Q&A: Anna Seidman Special Education, Spanish and Literature Tutor
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in Evanston. I went to Brandeis University near Boston for undergrad, and have an MA in Spanish language and literature from Loyola and another MA in special education from Northeastern Illinois. After teaching adult education at Association House of Chicago, I’ve been a special education teacher assistant at Highland Park High School for ten years.
2. Why did you want to become a teacher/tutor?
One of my favorite things is to learn something new, and I really enjoy exploring various subject areas. I also love connecting and bonding with students and seeing them succeed.
3. Tell us about a positive experience that you’ve had with a student.
I have a student who’s very quiet and shy. One time I was working with her on writing, and she chose to respond to a rather personal prompt (“What would be the title of your autobiography?”) She opened up in her essay about what her childhood and early adolescence had been like, and I felt honored that she trusted me enough to let me read it.
4. What’s the best part about being a tutor/teacher?
The best part is when students say “Oh, now I understand” after you explain something, and then show it by doing well in their class or on their test.
5. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?
One of my favorite teachers was Ms. Figiel at Evanston Township High School, who was one of the people who inspired me to study Spanish. Another was Mr. Sotnick, my US History teacher. I felt like both of these teachers showed a lot of caring for me, truly believed in me, and really encouraged me to do my very best.
6. What’s your favorite educational quote?
Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow. -Anthony J. D’Angelo
7. Why do you like working for iAchieve Learning?
Sarah is very kind and supportive, and I’ve also met several students through the company that I have or had great relationships with that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.
