Tutor Q&A: Carolyn Hanus Elementary School Tutor and Young Learners Tutor
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am an Elementary School Tutor and Young Learners Tutor. I am 31 years old and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies from DePaul University in December, 2008. After I completed my undergraduate experience at DePaul University, I had several great teachers and mentors who inspired me to further my education. I received a certificate in Early Childhood Education. I have worked with students from a variety of age groups. I worked in an after-school program assisting students with their homework, (kindergarten through fifth grade). I work with students (kindergarten through fifth grade) and assist them in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. In addition, I am very artistic and implement creative activities into my auditory and kinesthetic strategies while helping students in a positive environment achieve their goals. My personal hobbies and interests are art, reading, history, science, fitness and health, cooking, learning about child development, montessori methods and learning, running, biking, yoga, poetry, music, dance, and film.
2. Why did you want to become a teacher/tutor?
I currently tutor students and want to pursue a career in elementary education. I enjoy working with children of all ages. I help students accomplish their goals and gain confidence. I have learned educational methods that are used for a classroom or for a homework session. I can implement these strategies in one to one sessions with students.
3. Tell us about a positive experience that you’ve had with a student.
I have had many positive experiences with my students. One personal memory that I remember is when I would have a student look forward to working with me throughout the week and would want to extend the time of the tutoring session, since the learning was enjoyable.
4. What’s the best part about being a tutor/teacher?
The best part about being a tutor and teacher is that I am able to continue learning myself about new possibilities and options for the field of education. As a tutor, I am able to teach students the method that I feel is most appropriate and supportive towards their learning.
5. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?
My favorite teacher growing up was my art teacher in fifth grade. I remember being able to express myself by exploring new ideas and using a different media of art during each class. This teacher always gave me positive reinforcement and helped me gain confidence in my artistic abilities.
6. What’s your favorite educational quote?
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” (Malcolm X)
