Tutor Q&A: Ryan Trimble English, Spanish and French Tutor

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am originally from North Carolina. I grew up in a small town outside of Raleigh, eventually moving to Wilmington, NC for college. I graduated from UNC-W with a degree in French Language and Film Studies, and moved to Chicago in 2016. I have been tutoring English since high school and Spanish and French since college. Besides my work as a tutor, I have also worked as a television reporter and producer, as well as a social media manager for a major fast food corporation; recently, however, I have transitioned out of corporate life to work more steadily on both my writing and my acting career. I am also an improv comedian, performing with the musical improv team “UpNext” at whatever theatres will take us in Chicago!

2. Why did you want to become a teacher/tutor?
The first person to share another language with me was my mother. I found her old French books from college, and she would teach me little phrases she remembered. I will never forget the joy of learning how others express themselves, and I want to pass that on to others as often as possible. There is nothing better than when a concept clicks in a student’s mind, and you see them suddenly go, “Ooooh! Now I get it!”

3. Tell us about a positive experience that you’ve had with a student.
I never get tired of hearing a report of “My grade has gotten so much better!” or “My teacher says my Spanish has improved a ton!”

4. What’s the best part about being a tutor/teacher?
Getting to share my my passion for languages with students who otherwise just think of it as “something they have to do for a grade” makes it all worth it.

5. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?
My third grade teacher, Mrs. Poelman, and my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Johnston, both tie for that position. They were both encouraging, caring, and loving, and made sure students really invested in their education. Beyond that, I remember them both being hilarious, which is the most important thing a person can be to me. Also, Mrs. Poelman gave us Smarties before tests cuz it was “brain candy,” so she gets bonus points for that.

6. What’s your favorite educational quote?
The novelist Haruki Murakam once said, “Learning another language is like becoming another person.” That rings so true for me. There is no better way to broaden the cultural and intellectual boundaries of your mind than learning how other people communicate.

7. Why do you like working for iAchieve Learning?
