Tutor Q&A: Lauren Marsik
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, my name is Lauren Marsik and I was born and raised on Chicago’s northwest side and currently reside in Park Ridge with my daughter Caroline, age 5, and husband Rick. I attended Regina College Preparatory High School for girls and graduated with a B.A. in Media Communications from Loras College in 2002, as well as, hold a Masters’ Degree in School Counseling (k-12) from Concordia University Chicago. I have worked as a sales assistant for NBC and was also a Title I counselor for grades 1-3 at St. Mary Star of the Sea on Chicago’s south side. I currently work as a proctor and tutor for iAchieveLearning, but my main job is being a full-time mother.
2. Why did you want to become a teacher/tutor?
I enjoy working with children and teaching them new ideas and concepts. I also love the boost of confidence in seeing each child succeed at his or her goals.
3. Tell us about a positive experience that you’ve had with a student.
During my practicum, I taught a Freshman homeroom study skills class at Lane Technical High School and had a student who was very difficult to reach, as she did not care about her studies initially. As the year came to an end, she turned to me and said, “ I hope to see you around next year.”
4. What’s the best part about being a tutor/teacher?
Seeing each child succeed and grow confident in learning, as well as making progress with “difficult” students. Basically, having a positive impact on a student’s education, whether it be big or small.
5. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?
My favorite teacher was my seventh grade math teacher, Mrs. Sullivan. Not only was she a great teacher and explained concepts well, but she also took the time to give students one-on-one extra help.
6. What’s your favorite educational quote?
Dr. Seuss: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
7. Why do you like working for iAchieve Learning?
Because it employs the best tutors and services, is very well-known with an excellent reputation, organized, and managed well. But, most of all, I enjoy working and teaching children of all ages and backgrounds.
