Advantages to a Bilingual Education

Learning a second language can help your cognitive skills. Not only does it open up a new world to the person as they know more about the customs and traditions associated with the new language. Also, speaking a different language has proven to give the person a better memory, critical thinking skills, concentration, listening skills, and the ability to handle many tasks at once. As you can see, this would be beneficial to all students as they make their way through the beautiful world of education.

Teach Students a New Language Early
When children are young, their brains act like a sponge. They can soak up information at a startling rate. Almost overnight, they go from crawling on the floor to walking. The next day, they are counting to ten and beginning on their ABCs. Because of this, researchers say that the perfect time to introduce a new second language to a child would be around the age of six or seven. 

If school districts could employ more bilingual educators, especially in the primary grades, this could open up a whole new world to the young students. How great would it be for students to have mastered two languages by the time they reach high school?

Which Language to Learn?
While ideally, it would be nice to allow the student to choose which language they would want to learn early on in life, it might be best to look at the emerging trend in the world around us. There are more than 6,000 different languages spoken. Still, looking at these languages from an educational viewpoint, it would be optimal to teach students a common language rather than spoken by only a few thousand people in a remote part of the globe. 

For instance, the United States is home to nearly 41 million native Spanish speakers. This makes up about 13 percent of the whole population in America. The United States is home to the most Spanish speakers globally, right behind Spain’s country. Teaching young students Spanish could allow them to communicate with millions of more people within the same country. 

Could Open New Doors for Employment Down the Road
There is a demand for bilingual adults in numerous vocations, and the need is only going to grow as the years go by. The Hispanic population continues to expand in the United States. Employers are searching for people who can communicate effectively with customers and clients worldwide, so whether the language learned is Spanish or another language that is popular, there are career benefits to knowing another language.
