Finding Amazingly Free Audiobooks Online
For people who have taken the literacy leap, listening to an audiobook narrated by the perfect storyteller can be just as pleasurable as reading the book yourself. (Plus, sometimes you even receive the benefit of hearing the author read the audiobook. There is something special about hearing the writers themselves read aloud what they have created.) In a way, it almost takes you back to the day of old-time radio programs or even having your parents read you books at night as you are falling to sleep.
In any case, the number of audiobooks available nowadays is almost mind-blowing. It wasn’t long ago that audiobooks rarely were in demand. Nowadays, it does not take much effort to find an audiobook for virtually any literature out there. In fact, in 2020 alone, audiobook sales in the United States were $1.3 billion, and it has been steadily rising year after year.
But how difficult is it to find audiobooks on a budget? In the classroom, neither educators nor students seem to have much money to spare.
Don’t fret. There are online sources that provide certain audiobooks entirely for free.
Free Audiobooks Online
Sometimes it can be challenging to get all students to read a particular book for one reason or another. It could be just because they don’t want to make an effort, perhaps they are busy with home life, or maybe they do not have the reading skills to read the material. However, through audiobooks, it is a much simpler task for students to complete.
Check with the Local Library
There is a good chance that the local library will have plenty of free audiobooks to choose from through their website. Local libraries should be one of the top resources for school districts. Check with them first before attempting to find free audiobooks online anywhere else.
A couple of free audiobooks apps you should download when working with libraries are Overdrive and Libby. These apps will sync your device with the library’s lending system. Once the library card number is entered, you can search their databases of countless audiobooks.
LibriVox
LibriVox is the place to find free public domain audiobooks bound by copyright restrictions. They have plenty to choose from. It is their goal to eventually make every public domain book an audiobook available on their site. Furthermore, they have a free audiobook app called LibriVox Audiobooks and can be downloaded for Android or iPhone.
Lit2Go
Another site to find free audiobooks online is Lit2Go. They have books and poems to choose from. In addition, a person can download the PDF version of the book and read along with the audio if wanted. (Studies have shown students reading along with the text as it’s read aloud has been shown to increase comprehension of the material.)
Audible
Audible is one of the most popular audiobook services available to all. While they are not free per se, you can receive one free Audible audiobook when creating an account. Just be sure to cancel your membership after 30 days, and you will not have to pay a dime.
Google Play Books
With plenty of school districts using Google Docs and other Google services, Google Play Books have several free audiobooks to choose from as well. Not all audiobooks are free on there, so search wisely.
Hoopla
Hoopla is a bit like your local library but on a much grander scale. With your library card number, you have the choice to download free audiobooks, books, movies, music, and more. Books like The Hunger Games and newer novels such as those are available through Hoopla instantly. Be aware, though, that you only have so many downloads per month through Hoopla. Still, it should work out perfectly for teachers and students reading a specific novel with lesson plans in place that will take three to four weeks to complete.
