How to Change a Frustrated Student into a Triumphant One
There can often be a thin line between a student who is at the end of their rope and a student who looks forward to attending school most days. Frustration can eventually boil over if not careful and leave the most promising of students wondering if they can achieve the scores they would like in their classes.
Before a student becomes disenchanted enough to affect their attitude, some key things can be done to alleviate many significant issues. This must mean that the parents, educators, and administration must closely pay attention to when students exhibit personality changes.
Identify What the Problems Are
Many people automatically assume students are frustrated because they struggle in their classes. That is not always the case. It can be just one issue or a variety of problems that could be present.
Other problems a student may face could be related to bullying, relationship issues with friends and teachers, and a troubling home situation. All of these could lead to a student’s attitude change in school.
The good news is that once the problems are identified, then they can be addressed accordingly.
For instance, if a student is falling behind in class, a professional-quality tutor, like the ones provided by iAchieve, can make all the difference in the world, whether the tutoring is completed in person on online.
As for the other issues listed above, a concerned parent or teacher could contact a guidance counselor. A discussion with the student could yield important information that could enable the child to get back on track. Social and emotional learning (SEL) skills are proving to be just as important as academic skills for students nowadays in society. Being strong in academics is certainly crucial for success in school, but the inability to establish SEL abilities will eventually catch up to any student.
Are Expectations Too High?
Students will often put the weight of the world on their backs. They believe they can earn all A’s, become one of the more popular kids, and be a tremendous athlete in the school’s sports. If the expectations are eating them up, talking to a counselor wouldn’t be a bad thing. Students can’t be perfect at everything. Being able to handle setbacks or defeat is a skill that eventually needs to be learned. It’s easy to smile and sit back when everything is going your way. Character is often defined in the most troubling of times.
Perhaps the Student Is Bored?
If a student does not feel as if they are being challenged or there is nothing they are currently experiencing in school that they think can be used authentically in real life, frustration can undoubtedly happen. Boredom can derail the best of kids in and out of school.
The earlier the issues are resolved, the better it will be for the currently frustrated students. Sometimes it won’t take much to get the child looking forward to school once again!
