Little-Known Scholarships You Should Consider Applying For
My father was a high school science teacher and coach for over 30 years before deciding to retire. He has always enjoyed keeping in touch with many former students and athletes. As my dad passed about two years ago, we recently selected as a family to offer a small scholarship to two graduating high school seniors that could write a short essay letting us know how track (running, shot put, high jump, etc..…) has helped changed their lives for the better.
Assuming about 15 high school seniors participated in track during the school year (it is not a large school), the odds aren’t bad for perhaps getting one of these scholarships.
Once you realize just how much college costs, from tuition to books to living expenses, it won’t take long before recognizing every dollar helps.
Here are a few little-known, even unusual, scholarships you should consider applying for to help pay for those college expenses.
Tall Clubs International Foundation Scholarship
Receiving a scholarship for being on the tall side? Doesn’t sound so bad. If you are at least 5’10” for females and 6’2” for males, you could get a scholarship worth $1,000 from the non-profit organization Tall Clubs.
Stuck at Prom Scholarship
Sometimes all it takes is a bit of fun creativity to earn easy college money. The Stuck at Prom scholarship is worth between $500 to $10,000 for students who can create prom outfits made entirely from duct tape.
Minecraft Scholarship
As an educator who has taught students of all ages who loved playing Minecraft, I never had a clue they could earn $2,000 for college through their love of this video game. The Minecraft Scholarship is open to high school and college students with at least a 3.0 GPA who can write an essay about how Minecraft can positively influence education and career.
Doodle For Google Scholarship
Ever dream of having your artwork displayed online for millions, if not billions, to see? The Doodle for Google scholarship asks students to create a doodle artwork showing what they are grateful for. The winners will receive anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 towards college expenses. Plus, their artwork will be on Google for one whole day.
Superpower Scholarship
Everyone would love to have some superpower. I always had dreams where I could fly around the world, visiting anywhere I wanted. For the Superpower scholarship, all it takes is 250 words or less detailing which superhero or villain you would like to trade places with for a day. The winner receives $2,500 towards college costs.
Tips For Succeeding in Landing a Scholarship
Many of these scholarships do not have many people applying because most don’t even know they exist. Use this to your advantage. Be creative and make sure you stand out for the better. Furthermore, no one wants to read an essay littered with grammar mistakes. Have someone you trust read it over closely before submitting it. It could just be the difference you need to land that scholarship. It is not costing you anything to apply for these scholarships, so if you qualify, you might try for as many as possible.
