How to Create Fun Reading Challenges For Your Children

It can be challenging to keep children motivated to read. Whether you are a parent with kids or an educator with a classroom full of students, children can sometimes lose interest in finding new books to read. 

 

The trick is to present them with reading challenges that inspire them to keep turning pages and encourage them to proceed to the next book. 

 

Here are some fun little reading challenges that will work for children of all ages. 

 

Read Three Books Written By Your Favorite Author

If a child loves one book from a specific author, they might enjoy even more of the writer’s imagination. Ask the child to read three books by the same author and then rank them from favorite to least favorite. 

 

Monthly Reading Challenge

It is not unusual for a child to go on reading sprees. Adults do the same thing. This can end with a person reading many books one month and then very few the next. Set a monthly reading challenge where the child must read several books monthly. And when summer comes around, the child is out of school, double the number of books they are required to read since they will have more free time. 

 

Listen to an Audiobook

Choose an audiobook with the child and have them listen to it in the car or right before bed. They may enjoy it! People must learn what they miss out on when they have never tried an audiobook.

 

Compare and Contrast a Book to a Movie Made About the Book

I would always do this at least twice a year with my students. We would choose to read a novel in class, and then immediately after, we would watch the film that was made about the book. It is sometimes utterly amazing to see what the movie’s director has left out or changed about the story. Plus, it certainly helps children develop their compare and contrast skills. 

 

Use a Reading App 

While I may enjoy mostly reading physical books where I can turn the pages and hold them in my hands, the younger generation doesn’t have a preference either way nowadays. There are plenty of reading apps available. Download one your local library uses for its books to keep it inexpensive. 

 

Dress Like Your Favorite Literary Character

This can be accomplished either at home or in the classroom. Choose a day and have everyone dress up like their favorite character from one of the books they love. It should be fun and excite the kids to read books more often. 

 

Does the Child Need an Incentive?

All of us receive incentives for accomplishing tasks and objectives. There is nothing wrong with giving a child little rewards for meeting their reading goals. It will keep them inspired and motivated to keep moving forward. It can be as easy as making them their favorite meal or going to the movies with the entire family. The key is to keep them enjoying reading!
