Tutor Q&A: Oleg Chanyshev Math, Statistics, ACT/SAT Prep and Economics Tutor
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I majored in economics at the University of Chicago and initially pursued a career in finance/trading. However, I have always been interested in teaching and tutoring and have been involved in peer tutoring in high school, which later led to part-time work as a tutor and a TA in college. Today, I tutor high school and college students in a variety of subjects, including Math, Statistics, ACT/SAT prep and Economics.
2. Why did you want to become a teacher/tutor?
I have often seen my peers (and myself sometimes) struggle in various subjects throughout high school and college and I often wondered if that was due to lack of personal time spent with an instructor who could explain the material better one-on-one. I decided that working part-time as a tutor would be very rewarding and would still allow me to pursue other endeavors.
3. Tell us about a positive experience that you’ve had with a student.
I have had numerous positive experiences, but one that comes up to mind was with a student who needed to get a certain score on the ACT to be eligible for a specific job. The student was nervous about his preparedness and about potentially not getting the position because of this test, but I was able to bring his score up to a level high enough for him to get the job.
4. What’s the best part about being a tutor/teacher?
The best part is achieving results for students who want to succeed and seeing that they are happy and grateful in the end.
5. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why?
My favorite teacher was my physics and calculus teacher. He had a very cool personality and he made physics extremely interesting. We participated in many unconventional physics labs, such as a trip to the SixFlags or a night playing pool, after which we had to write reports on the mechanics of the motion of roller coasters and pool balls. That teacher made sure that the students learned and cared enough to learn.
6. What’s your favorite educational quote?
Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
7. Why do you like working for iAchieve Learning?
I really like the students and the way the company operates. I like the flexibility of the job and the ability to always communicate directly with the head of the company.
