How to Create an Effective Study Space
WHERE you study may be as important as HOW or WHAT you study: in fact, numerous studies have revealed that study location directly impacts your ability to remember information. While it is not always possible to get to a library or other “designated” study area, you can control your own environment and make it conducive to the best possible study outcomes. Below are some tips on creating an amazing yet effective study space where you can successfully hit the books.
Seek the Light
Much like plants, we humans thrive under the natural light of the sun; in fact, exposure to natural light directly affects our circadian rhythms and our productivity. If you’ve ever worked for hours under fluorescent lights, you know the negative effects that artificial lighting can have on us. When you set up your study space, look for ways to allow natural light in to create warmth and vitality.
Ditch the Sweats
It’s important not to get too comfortable in your study area. Changing out of your sweatpants and slippers can signal to your mind that it’s study time, not lounging time. Similarly, while this is different for everyone, sitting at an organized desk rather than lying in bed or on the couch may help your body and mind to approach studying in a more effective and regimented way.
Incorporate Nature
Scientifically, we know that plants play an important role in our well-being. This is not merely some homeopathic myth, but rather a fact that has been proven by NASA and other outlets, such as the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Low-maintenance houseplants like aloe and bamboo can provide a much-needed natural touch to your study space, not to mention improve air quality, circulation, and create a more peaceful, work-friendly atmosphere.
Choose Your Noise Carefully
It can be tempting to just throw on whatever music is available for background noise when studying; however, studies show that ambient noise rather than music is more effective when you are working. While music certainly has its positives, it is easy to get distracted by lyrics or a familiar beat when you are trying to study. Ambient noise such as sounds of nature or ocean waves, on the other hand, can provide a calming audible companion to your studying. And, of course, there are numerous apps for selecting ambient sounds. Consider ambient noise tracks as an overlay for the daily and annoying noises around you, allowing you to concentrate better.
Don’t Overstay Your Welcome
If you have created a comfortable space, it can be really tempting to start doing things besides studying—distracting things like watching Netflix, playing video games, or texting. It is, therefore, important that when you are finished with a study session, you leave your study space in order to keep it associated with learning rather than with lounging. Designate your study area and use it exclusively for that purpose.
Be Creative
While it’s important not to make your study space into a “man cave” or lounge, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be creative. Consider using bright colors, lively designs, fun patterns, and creative set-ups to truly inspire students. Creating your personal study area can be a great DIY project resulting in a space that is truly and uniquely yours.
Yes, how you study is obviously important, but don’t underestimate the importance of the space in which your do your work. Creating an effective study area can go a long way toward establishing strong study habits.
