Joe Hobbs
Bio:
I have a passion for both math and physics and love to teach these subjects to students. My career as a tutor began in the San Diego public schools and then began to work as a tutor outside the schools.
While the vast majority of my students are at the secondary or university level, I also work part time as a math teacher in a Japanese elementary school, which I love every bit as much as my main work.
Before my time as a math teacher in a Japanese elementary school, I worked in a Japanese High School as an SAT teacher for a few years due to my experience teaching the both the math and language portions of the SAT.
My teaching style varies from student to student as people are individuals and it’s the tutor’s job to connect with the student in a way that they can relate. Many students have challenges they need to overcome, whether that be simply having time to get their homework done, have a disability, and/or have had an unfortunate history in their math classes with teachers they could not connect with and having a tutor just do more of the same is not ideal.
In my off time, I have a passion for photography, although I only pursue it as a hobby. In addition, as you may have already guessed with my teaching job at a Japanese elementary school, I love Japan and vacation there for up to a month at a time about twice every three years, where I bike and climb in the countryside. A huge plus about tutoring online is that I am able to tutor while I’m in Japan, despite the time difference!
My formal educational background is a BS in Applied Mathematics (Science). My informal educational background is going to sleep watching math, physics, and/or astronomy YouTube videos every night (some exaggeration, but just a little!).
